Another week, another episode of Top Chef: Las Vegas. So as this episode is starting I can’t help but wonder, why the hell do they have to split it up between the girls and the boys at the beginning of the season? I mean I get, it builds the rivalry, but isn’t it a bit outdated and over-done? Oh yeah, and the whole gender equality thing. Let’s just slap everyone with a blue and a red chef’s hat and divide the teams that way. Not sure why that bugs me so much.
Five minutes into the show and I think I might already have my favorite line of the episode (said by guest chef judge Mark Peel) “I spent a long time with a potato in one hand and a knife in the other.” THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID.
The quickfire this week is absolutely amazing. Damn do I love me some potatoes. Carbs? Yes Please! So Jennifer C. makes the comment “45 minutes to cook potatoes is a bit of a challenge” and I start yelling at the TV. QUICKFIRE CHALLENGE. What part of that does she not get?!? It wouldn’t f-ing be a challenge if it were easy now would it? Oh but at least it’s followed by a lesbian fight! Preeti vs. Ashley. Put your vaginas away! Boy was that disappointing, I guess they were too busy cooking to fight. It started with a whimper and ended with a thud. Utensils down, hands up! Brings me back to my middle school days of trying to write the last few vocabulary words down on the quiz before I got caught by the teacher. Overall, good quickfire. My favorite part has to be the fact that Mark Peel goes around and while he judges everyone he provides feedback to everyone and they ALL get positive reinforcement [well except for Michael I., who just got "it's salty" TWSS] and then the bottom three get blunt negative feedback at the end.
[Sidenote: As I was about to start writing about the quickfire but realized I would need to reference the contestants' online bios in order to identify as I watch. Of course I open to the Top Chef page on BravoTV.com and the loser of this week's elimination challenge is revealed. My fun is spoiled now. Watching the episode and knowing Preeti was going home this week sucked. I like Preeti.]
This week’s elimination challenge is interesting enough. At least it’s something new … cooking for Air Force air(wo)men utilizing only the base kitchen. Wow, I’m realizing that knowing who gets eliminated completely takes any fun out of watching. One of the chefs I do enjoy watching is Jennifer C [oh and Ash Fulk also, but that's because I've married him in my head]. She seems so innocent but get her in the kitchen and she sets her foot down. Not in a bitchy way though, in that very straight-forward, get-er-done way.
I just had a thought/revelation … It seems that this season is filled with serving food for events/group of people that are denied to us ‘mos. Last week it was the engaged couple’s bachelor/ette parties and this week it’s serving to the military. Interesting trend. I would love to be in the Air Force if I could. Would be a good challenge.
Back to the show … the food looks really good. Most weeks I’m 50/50 on the food since there’s always a lot of seafood, but this week there wasn’t and therefore this week is much more appealing to me. I can’t imagine, are there vegetarians in the military?!? Doesn’t seem right. I know one certain vegan and trying to find something to eat for her is a job in and of itself. How could you do that within limited resources on the battlefield? NOT POSSIBLE. You lose, good day sir.
If I was one of the first group of people going into the judge’s room, I would smile my ass off knowing that I was one of the top choices. How they hold back the smirk, I have no idea. Michael V’s win was pretty un-exciting. Seeing Michael I. go back in the room was amusing. He acts like a total d-bag and is way too defensive about everything and I just can’t handle it. It makes me a bit sad to know that he isn’t going to be eliminated tonight. I do, however, love Padma’s attitude. I don’t remember this before but she’s really turning it up tonight and I LOVE it.
Awesome meter verdict: 4 out of 10 awesomes. Pretty lackluster episode overall. A bit disappointed, but i think a lot of that has to do with the fact that i knew the loser within the first 10 minutes.
