mad men: the gypsy and the hobo [s3e11]

By ryan rutledge, the guy who loves tv on October 25th, 2009

i cannot stand this affair between don and the skanky whore of a teacher. seriously. betty is amazing. what the hell is wrong with him?!? i’m just glad that betty is on her way to exposing don and all his lies. i was okay with the previous marriage one but now that he’s a cheating ass, i’m hoping the world falls down on him.

speaking of amazing … so happy to see joan in this episode. she’s absolutely awesome and i hope she ends up back at the agency in an even stronger role.

the attorney’s advice to just stay with don just blew my mind. what is wrong with people?

SUMMARY: corporate is coming to visit putting the sterling cooper office in a panic as they prepare for what is to come. meanwhile little sally is freaked out by her brother because she seems to think that he’s her grandfather reincarnated.

RUNNING COMMENTARY: it’s always hard to comment on a show like this because individually the scenes don’t seem as amazing but put together in the full episode they are amazing.

funny quote by betty “only boring people are bored.” that will be going down on my list of useful phrases to use.

i surely hope that joan ends up staying at the agency. she’s clearly one of the most exciting characters so she can’t be really leaving.

one of my favorite parts of the show is the historical accuracy, particularly with all the products and brand logos used on the show.

don is clearly daydreaming about this grand promotion. ugh it’s gut-wrenching because i get the feeling he’s just setting himself up for disappointment. this is why i never get my hopes up about things like that. set your expectations low and bury those feelings of hope as far as you can. and sure enough his dreams are crushed.

agency celebrations, oh how i miss you.

oh dear. i can’t believe they are driving that john deere around the office. i feel like that it’s a chopped foot waiting to happen. and sure enough. omg. so freaking gross. and that is is why when we won the john deere account they just gave us hats.

AWESOME METER: 7.5 out of 10 awesomes.

THE RUN-DOWN SUMMARY: peggy decides she wants to move to manhattan, her sister is a jealous bitch about it but tries to hide it. the agency pitches some crazy sports client and makes grandiose commitments to putting together a crazy campaign. betty’s dad continues to show his disdain for don but then he dies in this episode anyway so i guess it’s all irrelevant anyway. sal’s wife tries to make love to him but of course he comes up with an excuse. how she hasn’t figured out he’s a homosexicle, i have no idea … glad she’s finally starting to put two and two together. peggy searches for a roommate and is all sorts of awkward about it but it seems to finally work out, except you can tell they are setting it up for failure. the pepsi/patio client hates the work the agency did for them making peggy pretty excited given she was against it from the beginning. peggy tells her mom she’s going to move to manhattan and her mom flips out and gives her the cold shoulder. nothing ground-breaking in this episode beyond betty’s dad dying but a good episode none-the-less.

THE RUNNING COMMENTARY: ha. i can’t tell you how amusing it is having betty’s dad on the show this season. such a crazy old man. gotta feel bad for anyone suffering from alzheimer’s disease. makes me feel bad for laughing at his actions.

watching the agency pitch this new sports client was sort of outrageous. incredibly amusing that they all just sit there and throw out insane ideas. no doubt that they’ll take it all to the media planning folks at the agency and make them bring everyone back down to reality.

the conversation between betty & her dad was completely confusing to me. i couldn’t tell if he was lucid some of the time. he started out by calling her elizabeth but most of the rest of the conversation made sense but then he randomly switches to throwing in a negative comment about don. maybe i wasn’t paying attention but i thought it was a mumbled conversation.

when peggy posts her roommate listing up we discover her real name is margaret (but i think we might have already know that?) and she’s allergic to cats. thrilling.

any scene with sal in it always tends be pretty amusing. the one between him and his wife is pretty amusing. first he sits there and makes up excuses for not consummating their relationship (how she hasn’t figured out he’s gay by now is BEYOND me). Then the whole dance around the room was priceless. But not as priceless as the face his wife makes as she starts putting the signs together and perhaps seriously considers the fact that he’s gay for the first time.

the british man who is there from their

oh dear. the prank calls to peggy are hilarious. seems like something i would do, although mine would have been more risque.

what’s the deal with betty’s dad eating ice cream with salt on it? seems rather gross. perhaps they are taking his craziness to another level?

one of my favorite characters of the show has to be joan. there’s something about her. she’s like someone from the 21st century living in the 1960s.

ooooooooo. they’re talking about jai-alai. i couldn’t figure out what the hell they were talking about. first i thought high line and i couldn’t figure out what the hell that was … a sports bar? etc. then they show the equipment and it all falls into place.

peggy’s smirk on her face as the pepsi/patio client walks out the door is excellent. so deserved.

betty’s dad dying is sort of sad [but not as sad as the power dying as i typed that]. ah and that is why this episode is called the arrangements.

okay power is back on and we can continue watching …

random comment but i really can’t stand when HD networks run their programming in HD and then the commercials only in SD. complete crap.

the scene of peggy telling her mom she’s moving to manhattan is one of those scenes where i just can’t believe how backwards society then [not that it still has come full circle]. i just don’t get closed-minded thinking like that.

awesome meter verdict: 7 out of 10 awesomes. it’s hard to write an entry with funny commentary about this show given the excellent quality of the writing and acting. this is truly unlike any other show out there.
